What is a compatibility reading?
A compatibility reading is a job, not a system. Some traditions own a native two-person rite: Vedic Ashtakoota Milan compares two Moon-nakshatras and scores 36 points across eight kootas; Enmusubi knots two threads and reads the shape of the bond, with no birth data at all. Others overlay two individually-cast charts and read the contacts between them — Western synastry, Bazi or Saju Day-Master pairing, Zi Wei spouse-palace comparison. A third group answers a question that names the relationship without matching two charts: I Ching, Tarot, and electional calendars. Sun-sign pairings are one data point among many; Moon contacts and nakshatra matching carry more of the traditional weight. Divination Nexus labels each kind — Traditional, interpretive pairing, or question-oracle — so a kundli score is never confused with a card pull. The live Together engine on this hub is Enmusubi; the catalog below is the map.
What are the three kinds of compatibility reading?
Every system in this catalog falls into exactly one kind. Mixing the kinds — treating a tarot spread as a matching score — is the failure the Together job exists to prevent. A user searching “are we compatible” wants a native rite or an overlay. A user searching “is today a good day to propose” wants a When oracle.
| Kind | Label on the page | What it actually does | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native two-person rite | Traditional | The tradition itself takes two people’s data and scores or reads the pair. | Enmusubi; Vedic Ashtakoota Milan; Mesoamerican marriage day-rating |
| Overlay / comparison | Interpretive pairing | Two individually-cast charts are stacked; the contacts between them are read. | Western synastry; Bazi/Saju 合婚; Zi Wei spouse-palace comparison; year-animal pairing |
| Question about the pair | Ask/When oracle — not a matching system | A single oracle answers a question that names the relationship. No overlay, no pair score. | I Ching; Liu Yao; Tarot; Runes; Benge; Omikuji; Panchang muhurta |
Which systems actually match two people?
Native two-person rites and the closest overlays. Each block names Traditional vs interpretive pairing.
What is synastry, and is it better than sun-sign compatibility?
Western synastry · Interpretive pairing
Synastry overlays two full natal charts and reads the aspects between the two people’s planets. Working practice weights Moon–Moon, Sun–Moon, Venus–Mars, Ascendant–MC contacts, then Saturn and the outers. Sun-sign compatibility is the business-card layer of that résumé: useful as a first glance, not the reading. Composite charts (the relationship midpoint) and progressed overlays sit in the same family. This hub has no tropical Western natal engine, so we will not generate houses or a rising to fill the gap; the encyclopedia names the mechanic, and the live Together card is Enmusubi. Synastry answers temperament fit and where the pair resonates or fricts. It does not answer exact timing — pair it with a When system.

Is my kundli matching good for marriage?
Vedic Ashtakoota Milan · Traditional
Ashtakoota Milan is the native matching rite: compare two Moon-nakshatras and score 36 points across eight kootas — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha-Maitry, Gana, Nadi (8 points, the heaviest; same-Nadi scores 0), and Bhava. The traditional verdict is ≥18/36 acceptable, 25+ strong. Nadi Dosha is the most-cited friction marker in Indian matching; the corpus carries the bhang (cancellation) list — same nakshatra, same rashi, or a high overall score (28+/36) cancels it. Doshas are weather warnings, not sentences: the reading names the quality of friction and offers the cancellation check. Mangal Dosha, 7th-house and 7th-lord analysis, and Navamsha (D-9) sit beside the score. This page is the table and the labels; a live Ashtakoota calculator is not on the hub yet.
What is Enmusubi, and when is it the right Together engine?
Enmusubi · Traditional
Enmusubi is the only two-thread rite in this catalog. Two cords are knotted together; the reading is the knot itself — the shape of the bond, not a score, and not a birth-data overlay. Ask it when the question is “what is this between us,” not “are Aries and Taurus a match.” It is the live Together engine on Divination Nexus. Two names are the minimum input.
How do Bazi and Saju read a pair?
Bazi / Saju 合婚 · Interpretive pairing
Four-pillars matching compares two Day Masters (the elemental relationship between the two selves), the ten-gods each person is to the other, earthly-branch interactions between the charts, and each person’s spouse palace (the Day Pillar’s branch). The per-person machinery is traditional; the pair-overlay is an interpretive layer, and this page says so. It answers constitution fit — does her element feed my chart or starve it — and it has a timing feature other pair systems lack: each person’s Dayun changes the pairing year by year. Saju compatibility is the natural next search beside the Saju explainer.
Is this day right for these two people to marry?
Mesoamerican marriage day-rating · Traditional / When hybrid
The tonalamatl codices rate named acts — including marriage — on specific days of the 260-day wheel. The couple enters as two birth-days (number + tonalli); the marriage question is read as the rating of the chosen wedding day and how the two birth-days relate on the wheel. The day-rating machinery is sourced; the two-person couple-reading is a parked follow-up, not a live engine. It is a When+Together hybrid: is this day right for these two, not a pair percentage.
What is interpretive pairing?
These systems have no native two-person rite. The compatibility reading is built by comparing two individuals and reading the between-layer. All carry the interpretive-pairing label.
| System | What gets compared | The between-layer | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Western synastry | Two natal charts | Aspects between planets (Moon–Moon, Sun–Moon, Venus–Mars…) | Closest-to-native in the West; still two constitutions compared, no single sacred pair object. No tropical natal file on this hub. |
| Zi Wei Dou Shu | Two 12-palace charts, each with a 夫妻宮 | Each spouse palace read against the other’s Self palace; star contacts in 夫妻宮 | Interpretive pairing. Per-star spouse-palace readings are in the system doc. |
| Year-animal pairing | Two birth-year animals (or Thai day-planets) | Elemental/animal relationship: same-element, complementary, or clash | The lightest, fastest check. Honest stretch. Label sun-sign and year-animal layers as shallow. |
| Seimeigaku name-grid | Two written names | Name-grid interactions of the two persons | Niche; no birth data. Label clearly interpretive. |
| Kundli without full Milan | Two D-1/D-9 charts, 7th house and 7th lord | Where each person’s partnership energy points; Mangal cross-checks | Partial version of Ashtakoota when a 36-point score is not requested. |
Year-animal pairing also lives in Mongolian Zodiac, Thai Hak, and Kalachakra.
Can tarot or I Ching give a compatibility score?
No. Question-oracles answer a concrete question that names the relationship. None compares two charts. Do not pretend Ifá or Tarot is a compatibility system because two cards came out. The honest product shape: the user asks; the oracle answers; the reading is about the situation, not a percentage.
| System | Question shape | Compatibility use |
|---|---|---|
| I Ching | One concrete question, one cast | “Should I stay?” / “Is now the moment to commit?” — the direction oracle. The hexagram narrates the situation’s shape. |
| Liu Yao | Yes/no or what-happens | The outcome engine: will this commitment go through? Reads the use-god and whether time supports the matter. |
| Tarot | Open or spread-based | A you / them / between spread reads the pattern of the bond. The Lovers names an archetypal pattern, never a verdict percentage. |
| Runes | One or three runes | The letter of the relationship-moment. Mannaz is the native two-person rune; a 3-rune past/present/future is a relationship cast. |
| Benge | Do I / don’t I on an irreversible matter | Marriage is a named weighty-matter use in the corpus. Encyclopedia only — documented, not performed. A decision oracle, not a matching system. |
| Omikuji | One question per slip | “Will this relationship flourish?” — temple-grade slip; light, fast. A relationship question is a normal omikuji input. |
| Ifá / Afa / Sikidy | Open pattern, question-framed | The odu or pawpé carries the pattern of the situation, including the relational dimension. Read as pattern, never as a pair-score. |
Timing-oracle siblings (When, relationship-flavored): Panchang muhurta for a shubh window, Tonalpohualli marriage-day rating, and Qi Men Dun Jia for which hour to make the ask. Afa and Sikidy sit with Ifá as pattern-oracles, not pair scores.
Which system answers which compatibility question?
The Together job routes on the shape of the question. The differentiator is a labeled stack — Ashtakoota (traditional score) + synastry (between-aspects) + muhurta (when to act) + Benge or I Ching (the decision) — each named by kind, none simulated.
| The question | Route to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Are Aries and Taurus a good match? | Year-animal / sign-pair overlay, then synastry | Fastest honest answer. Label the sun-sign layer as the shallow one. |
| Are we a match? Check our charts. | Western synastry (encyclopedia) · live card: Enmusubi | Between-aspects read. Moon–Moon / Venus–Mars weight order. No generated natal houses on this hub. |
| Is my kundli matching good? | Ashtakoota Milan with dosha + bhang disclosure | The native 36-point score. No other system in the catalog produces a number with a traditional threshold. |
| We’re both into saju / my partner’s day master is… | Bazi/Saju 合婚, labeled interpretive pairing | Day-Master relationship + ten-gods-between; Dayun timing layer. |
| What is this between us — the shape of the bond? | Enmusubi | The only two-thread rite. Bond-quality answer; no birth data required. |
| Is this day good for a proposal / wedding? | Panchang muhurta / Tonalpohualli day-rating (When) | Electional act-rating, not a pair-score. |
| Should I stay? Will this work out? | Benge or Liu Yao — Benge for the irreversible kind | Decision-oracle framing. Never presented as a compatibility score. Benge is encyclopedia only. |
| What’s going on between us right now? | Tarot two-person spread / I Ching / Runes | Situation narrative, archetypal label. Not a match percentage. |
| What kind of partner will I meet? | Single-chart 7th house / spouse palace — not a two-person system | A natal read of one chart (Jyotish, Zi Wei 夫妻宮, Bazi spouse palace), not a match. |
What we will not do with compatibility
- Every compatibility page states the kind: native two-person rite (Traditional), overlay / interpretive pairing, or question-oracle.
- Dosha is a weather warning, not a sentence. Name the quality of friction and the bhang check; never “you are incompatible.”
- No score for question-oracles. Tarot, I Ching, Runes, and Benge outputs are narratives or verdicts about the situation, never percentages.
- Sun-sign compatibility is explicitly shallow: one data point of 120+. The hub’s value is the layer underneath.
- Benge and possession-channel uses stay cultural / reading-system docs. No live-procedure content.
- No best/only claims in public copy. “The most-cited marker in Indian matching” is sourced; “the most accurate” is not.
Compatibility questions people actually ask
- What makes two charts compatible — sun sign or moon sign?
- Moon contacts carry more of the traditional weight than sun signs. Synastry weights Moon–Moon and Sun–Moon first; Vedic Ashtakoota Milan scores two Moon-nakshatras and does not start with the Sun. A sun-sign pair page is the shallow layer, labeled as such.
- What is synastry?
- Synastry overlays two natal charts and reads the aspects between them. It is interpretive pairing: traditional mechanics applied to a pair, not a native two-person rite. This hub does not generate tropical houses to simulate it. The live Together engine is Enmusubi.
- Is my kundli matching good for marriage?
- Ashtakoota Milan scores 36 points across eight kootas. ≥18/36 is the traditional acceptable threshold; 25+ is strong. Nadi Dosha is the heaviest single koota; same-Nadi can cancel (bhang) when partners share a nakshatra or rashi, or when the overall score is 28+. A dosha names friction quality. It is not a curse.
- Can tarot tell me if we are compatible?
- Tarot can answer a question about the relationship. It cannot produce a compatibility score. A you / them / between spread reads the pattern of the bond. Mixing that with a matching percentage is the failure this catalog exists to prevent.
- Is this day good for a proposal?
- That is a When question, not a pair-score. Panchang muhurta grades an auspicious window for the act. Tonalpohualli rates the chosen day for marriage on the 260-day wheel. Neither system is a substitute for Ashtakoota or synastry.
